on the one side and vice presidential nominee paul ryan on the other side have both been posted online tonight in typical, late in the campaign, october surprise, boy do we have a bomb shell fashion. first on the right at the tucker carlson website, the right wing sirens blaring excitement tonight is for the same kind of tape they have tried to make bomb shells out of the last three times we have gone through this in the election cycle. over and over and over again, the right has tried to make huge news not out of something president obama has done as president but out after a big unveiling, a big, giant, coordinated round of attention for something from president obama's supposedly secret past. this spring it was the glen beck website dousing themselves in gasoline and pulling the fire alarm over video of president obama speaking as a law student at harvard. video at a press conference where obama says nothing news worthy. that was explosive tape, not at all. last month it was the drudge report, which means the romney c campaign, it was them again dousing themselves in gasoline and pu

santorum for the republican nomination. he didn't get a bounce after he picked paul ryan or after the convention, but he is after this debate. so we are seeing a lot of movement right now, but i think the best gauge of where this race will be is when we move on a week or two from now where we see where all the dust settled after a volatile period in the numbers. >> i thought you were going to say when our new nbc news poll comes out that's what we know. with that said the pugh poll says if the election were held today, that's 49/45 amongst likely voters. amongst registered voters barack obama 46%, mitt romney 46%. the gallup daily tracking likely voters, obama 47, romney 49. if you can keep up up at this point, 49/46. the state polls caught your eye as well, michigan in particular. you look at those numbers. >> right. in the michigan poll it was a survey that had president obama holding onto a narrow three-point lead down from a 10--point lead earlier last month. that poll was kind of what we saw. i was talking to a republican looking at all the polling numbers and races who said,
versus ryan. if you're advising the vice president, because he's got a lot of ground work to make up for it here out of that first debate for their ticket, what do you tell him? >> i'd say to joe biden, be yourself, because biden has a unique way of bringing reality into these very substantive conversations. and i'll use big bird as an example, and we're sort of making a joke, and yes, it gives people laughter, but there's something very serious about this issue. i mean, the "sesame street" programming, pbs programming has been in -- i worked in education for a number of years -- the gold standard, not just here in the united states, around the world, recognized as a gold standard in children's education. at a time when kids in our country, not enough of them can actually read proficiently, what sense does it make to cut? i mean, we're not going to balance that $5 trillion hole by getting rid of big bird. that's what i think part of reminding people about big bird does, how ridiculous the rhetoric from the romney/ryan campaign is, but also the idea that, so, you're going to cut somet

joe biden goes head to head with congressman paul ryan in the vice presidential debate. of course, our anticipation is heightened by the loss that the champ took in round one on wednesday night. president obama pulled a lot of his punches in his debate with governor romney, so if the original strategy was for biden to go in with a soft touch against paul ryan, we can be sure that that is going out the window. he is coming out swinging. gloves off. now, romney was able to dodge blows against his economic plan because actually there's not much of a plan there to jab at. take his strategy for economic recovery, to fill the revenue gap for a result from tax cuts is an exercise in shadow boxing futility. he hasn't yet told us what it is he's planning to do. but by hitching his wagon to paul ryan and endorsing ryan's budget plan, he attached himself to clearly articulated policy and a record that leaves the whole ticket exposed to attack which gives joe biden an opening to hit romney so hard -- to hit ryan so hard that mitt romney is going to feel it too. from the sound of it, the vice presi

a bit next week to the vice presidential nominees. paul ryan and joe biden will face off in their only debate next thursday night. paul ryan has just left his four-day debate camp. he is heading back to wisconsin for a fund-raiser tonight. and as for the vice president, we check in with msnbc news campaign embed carrie dan. she's embedded with vice president joe biden's team. carrie, vice president biden's schedule shows him to be in wilmington, delaware, right now, and for the next few days. what is planned for him? >> that's right, milissa. he's going to be doing his own debate camp there, up until a day before the debate. he's spending time with chris van hollen, that's his sparring partner. van hollen has worked with paul ryan, he's a democrat from maryland, who worked with ryan with and against on the house budget committee. so van hollen is someone who's very familiar, not only with his policies. so the two of them will be participating in mock debates. they've done two to date, and i'm sure they'll be doing a lot more up until wednesday, before they head to danville, kentucky, f
paul ryan refused to say how much their tax cut would cost alleging it would take too long to get into all the math. congressman ryan defended that dodge yesterday. >> i didn't want to get into all the math of this because everybody would start changing the channel. >> and an hour ago, after offering no new specifics on his ticket's tax plan ryan said this -- >> problem is it took me about five minutes to go into all of this with you and you're in a 30-second tv show you can't do it as much. >> on behalf of the television industry, we salute you paul ryan for being so consider ate of the viewers at home. americans still have close to no idea as to what the romney/ryan plan is actually all about. will an 11-minute period of open discussion tomorrow night prove sufficient for governor romney to, quote, get into all the math? perhaps. but with so many of his own policies and open conflict with one another it seems like the most pressing equation for team romney to solve is whether mitt plus mitt equals one or two. the paradox of the mittens, katrina. >> i mean the romney/ryan campaig

and the president wrapping up final debate practice yesterday, joe biden was in north carolina and paul ryan in iowa. they traded jabs over the middle class. >> vice president biden just today said that the middle class over the last four years has been buried. we agree. >> mitt romney is under pressure to give more details into both his tax reform proposal and plans for the middle class. yesterday, he finally offered up an idea saying in order to pay for his reform each taxpayer would have a limit on how much they could deduct. the number he threw out was $17,000 and compared that to a bucket saying you can take whatever deductions you want but once you hit $17,000 that's it. we heard his plan for undocumented immigrants. he would not revoke the temporary limitations adopted by the president but if elected there would be no more protections. we're coming back after the break. >> i wouldn't be where i am today if it wasn't for capella university. i go to work every day and know that i make a difference. when patients leave this office they have hope in their eyes. it make me feel like i'm really doi
the moderator gives governor romney a chance to do what paul ryan said he didn't have time to do and that is explain how they pay for a $5 trillion tax cut. as you pointed out, ed, it is a time problem that is vexing in this budget. it's a math problem. they can't pay for it. if they can't pay for it to provide the tax cut for the rich then they're going to raise taxes on the middle class. that's what the economic studies have shown. look, i don't know anybody who thinks we' we're another tax cu a millionaire away from a stronger middle class. >> watch ed schultz every night at 8:00 p.m. eastern on "the ed show" on msnbc. >>> a judge in pennsylvania has blocked the state's stricter voter inch d. law. ruling means that voters in pennsylvania will not have to show a state-approved i.d. to cast ballots on election day. the judge said he was concerned that the law could prevent some people from voting. the stricter voter i.d. laws in four states remain but tougher laws in at least six other states were either shelved or watered down, including those in a few swing states. >>> america
and mr. ryan have given no details but have given a promise that they're going to reduce taxes by 20%, how does mitt romney deal with that tomorrow? what does he actually say that he has previously refused to say on explaining that? >> well, i think it's fascinating that they're treating mitt romney like he's the president and a lot in the media treat president obama like he's the challenger. what president george w. bush did when he was governor of texas is said i want to reduce taxes across the board and i want to make sure we have a balanced budget. he wasn't very specific during the campaign, and when he became president, he released a series of principles that went to capitol hill that said these are the measures that meet my -- >> here is the problem with that though, ron. people who have assessed his mathematics have deemed them to be completely impossible. michael, this is just in from mitt romney on how he'll pay for his massive 20% across the board tax cut. take a listen. >> everybody is going to get up to a $17,000 deduction and you can use your charitable deduction or you
are raised now for the paul ryan versus joe biden debate. the obama campaign i don't think can afford the perception that they lost two in a row. i would think vice president joe biden's fingernails are beginning to sweat about next wednesday because he's somewhat in the same position as president obama. he's been vice president in for four years. had a lot of things going. been a long time since he's debated. paul ryan has been in the cut and thrust of congress, to be better prepared. however, ryan is in the shoes president obama was in last night and the expectations are high for ryan. i think most people feel that paul ryan will walk joe biden's dog in this debate, and that's a down for him. i would venture that the vice presidential debate may get the largest audience of any vice presidential de debate we've had so far. >> in 2008 with the introduction of sarah palin was the first time the vice presidential debate was ever the highest 01:39:43:rate ed debate. we have this again. >> governor romney, last night, people say he mangled the truth to put it gently. the obama campaign --

can't attack. he has to defend. if it had gone well, he could have attacked ryan and romney. now he has to defend the president. >> well, i disagree completely because here's the problem with that. this mitt romney's the same mitt romney that we've known for the last six or seven months, the same mitt romney that voters very cautious with the last six or seven months. it's not about defending the president, it's about taking the fight to mitt romney making them defend, that fantasy show he put on during the other debate where he made stuff up and didn't know his own tax plan, making them stick to what they've been the last six or seven months. >> this is where i think paul ryan will have pressure on him and where i expect paul ryan to perform very well. i mean, i found obama's debate performance totally lacking in specifics. we still don't know what his tax plan is or his deficit plan or his budget plan. but paul ryan has become the personification for the democrats of all that is callous and cold and evil about the romney campaign. so ryan now has i think an opportunity to not only
those cuts because he supports the ryan budget. on social security, why don't you pott point out -- point out the republican party wants to privatize it. i wanted to be the head coach speaking into president obama's ear. i read the transcript. the transcript is factually the president will be fine there. you know, it looked like he was not prepared for mitt romney etch-a-sketching his way out of this debate. that's really what mitt romney did. he grabbed his etch-a-sketch we've been waiting for it. he literally became a totally different politician with different views. his $5 trillion tax plan, you know he said only embrace teachers. he talked about how regulation was essential. these are all views and positions that romney has never supported over the course of the 18 months. i think that was really surprising and i think that actually shook the president a bit and he didn't really know how to deal with it. is the president just going to sit over there and call romney a liar? that's not necessarily helpful.
